Mexico - De les ciutats a la muntanya - From the cities to the mountain

[ENGLISH FOLLOWS]

[ENGLISH]
We are heading to Aguascalientes. Everybody is asking us why are we going there if it's not a turistic place, the reason is Daniela, a mexican friend who is living there. And we've not been disappointed at all, Daniela's family has received us with the open arms, making us feel like home. We visited the city, the dam with a broken christ and lots of museums, we drank good beer because Daniela's family has liqueur, wine and beer shops and, even though, we went to the university in order to see the projects of Daniela's architecture students.

The museum of the death was so curious, because the meaning of death is totally different than in my society, not feeling sad for the person who passed away, the other way around, they make big celebrations the day of the death. With the spanish conquere, all those traditions merged with cristianism, but they are still really present in currently. There's a really representative icon of all that, the Catrina squll. It represents a cheak peas seller dressed as european burguesy of that time. This squll was created by Posada in one of his xylographies to reivindicate the social differences of that moment in a satiric mode. In order to make copies of the xylographies, they used metal engravings and ink. By chance, we could join one of the engraving workshops to learn it ourselves.

It was difficult leaving the city due to the huge amability of the "hidrocálidos", they even gave us many contacts in different places of Mexico. Therefore, we prepared a thankful lunch for Daniela's family; salmorejo, bread with tomato and spanish omelette. When we were leaving, they gave us a bottle of good tequila to flood the sadness of the leaving.

Another thing that I love of Mexico is the food. You can eat at anytime. Do you want tacos at 2 at night? No problem, you will have a really good tacos place opened. You can eat anywhere; markets, restaurants, street food, road food,... There's plenty of choices, each region has its own specialities and you can eat it with delicious fruit juices.
Only one consideration, almost all the food is spicy, and I love it! They always bring you different sauces of spicy peppers, each one of them more infernal. They even have a scale to measure the spicy. More than one day I've already "enchilado", is the word to express getting drunk of spicy, the mouth is boiling and you keep it opened with your hand like a fan, like if you would like to extinguish the fire, although the feeling is that flames come out instead of breath. There's some tricks to stop it, like putting salt under the tongue or take something sweet. But that's not all, you can suffer the revenge of Moctezuma, like they say here, which consists in extracting fire from the third eye when you go to the toilet. Everything really funny!

After Aguascalientes, we've visited Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Queretaro, three really lively and beautiful cities. We are a bit overwelmed of cities, so we've decided to scape to the nature before Mexico city, going to the nevado de Toluca.

That was exactly what I needed, I've clearly realized it when I've breathed the air of the mountain and I've seen myself surounded by forest. A but has let us at the crossing with the natural park and we've started walking until the entrance. When we've been walking for a long time, a van of really nice "chilangos" (people from Mexico city) has taken us until the entrance. There they have opened the shelter for us, turned on a big fire and we could spend a good night there sharing beers and tequila with two other mexicans.

We have waken up really early to reach the nevado de Toluca, an inactive volcano at 4680m that has a giant crater with two lagoons, the lagoon of the sun and the moon. The hike has been a bit hard due to the heigh and the string wind in the peak of the crater, but the wonderful landscape deserved the effort. We are so pleased that we have decided staying one more night before deep diving to the huge Mexico city.

Norte de Mexico

[ENGLISH FOLLOWS]

[ENGLISH]
We, the "gachupines" (this is how the taxi driver called us) land in Monterrey, the third biggest city of Mexico, located in the north-east, full of museums and surounded by amazing mountains. Here, Toño and Perla have hosted us, a young mexican couple, through couchsurfing. Couchsurfing is a social network to get hosted or meet people wherever you travel. The idea is to share moments with locals and have an experience for both sides. It is totally free and works with recommendations.

We've been so lucky because they've treated us really well. They've given us their home's keys, showed us the city, taken us to play role games to their friend's home, taken us to eat outside and, even though, on Sunday we went on an excursion to Allende, Perla's home town. There, we met her family who is peddling and have a popular show where they sell fruit, honey (her father is beekeeper) and all kind of processed corn, like the "pastel de elote" (corn cake). Also, they were preparing the elote like a lollipop with sauces and, of cource, spicy.

The first day I had a huge cultural shock. I was overwelmed by the tons of street shops full of products, supermarkets or malls with the shelves full of food and plenty of brands to choose for each product, high buildings, giant advertisements everywhere and huge traffic. I couldn't stop comparing with Cuba where all these it the other way around; almost empty shelves in the shops, empty freeways and advertisements only related with the government or the advantages of the comunism.

I've quickly got used to the advanges of a capitalist country, like having internet, being able to buy whatever you want whenever or receiving an efficient service. But I see the things from a different angle, and I realize of the few really important things that we consider necessary and the tons of them that I don't need.

The farewall was hard but we continued the trip to San Luis Potosi, a city full of churches, which has the name Potosí due to the mining zone that is nearby, like the town of Potosi in Bolivia, which I visited when I was in Peru, with mines where they extracted tons of silver. From this town comes the spanish expression, vales más que un Potosí (you are worthier than a Potosi).

3 camiones (buses) and a 2km tunnel, mining style and really narrow, transported us to another world, Real de Catorce. A town almost at 2800m high, where the isolation and the quietness makes you go slower. We were hosted in the home of a singer with mexican father and danish mother, who at the age of 28 years old decided leaving Copenhaguen to live in Real de Catorce. The place has a lot of misticism, spirituality and ghost towns. The towns were formed where the mines were placed but when the material was depleted, the towns were abandoned.

We did several excursions and a horse riding to the desert, where we camped to spend the night there. It's not a dune desert like you have in mind, it's a desert full of cactus and ground.

It was the time to go back to reality, so we went to Huasteca Potosina to meet Jason, a friend of mine from Santa Margarida i els Monjos who lives in Mexico city, and two friends of him. Huasteca is a really beautiful area with mountains and tropical vegetation. In order to go back to reality smoothly, we visited the Edward James gardens, surrealist gardens in the middle of the jungle that weren't finished, with stairs that doesn't take you anywhere, nonsense columns, scultures, divided floors and waterfalls.

At the sunset, we visited the "sótano de las golondrinas", a huge hole that is the home of milions of swallows. Therefore, at the sunset time, the show started. Groups of swallows were flying above us at high speed and screaming, then they where falling down really fast inside the hole and they were disappearing until the sun rises.

Mexico is treating me really well, I feel super well here and it is "bien padre". I'm making every stop longer than expected and I realize than the country has a lot to offer me. I've also realized that it is huge, besides in the map it seems small. Here they compare that Spain is smaller than the state of Chihuahua, at the north of Mexico. But, that's exactly one of the reasons for which I wanted to travel one year, in order to let me catch from the people, places, traditions, and not having to rush to see everything. That's also one thing that I've taken out from my head, I don't need to see everything, I prefer skipping countries to not leaving them time enough to let them open my eyes to new learnings.
